Historic homes are old homes, and, just like people, who are usually seen as old when they approach the common age of retirement which is 60, old homes are usually those aged more than 50, or those approaching 60. In addition to being old, these homes are also representative of the architectural style during the era it was built, or possess a uniqueness or certain features that make them stand out from the rest.
A number of old homes have been formally designated as historic homes by the National Historic Trust or its state branches or by local historic organizations. Some of these are located in areas designed as historic districts; others are designated as historic because of their association to a historic event or a prominent person in history.
A study presented at the American Real Estate Society in 2009 studied historic homes in the U.S. aged 67 to 219 years. The study determined that 119 years is the breakpoint age where age affects significantly the value of the historic house. It says that the homebuyer takes pride in owning the oldest home in the area, particularly if the area has been designated as a national historic district. The oldest home takes the value and reputation of the authentic antique.
