Choosing the Best Home Improvement Strategy

Published by julia | Filed under Buyer / Seller Tips, Market Trends, Pinellas County Homes, Real Estate

There are many additions that people can do to their home to personalize it or to simply increase the value of the home.  Some of these additions or changes to the piece of real estate are obvious.  Some of these changes are more subtle.  Avoiding an increase in taxes for these improvements has also been a subject of great interest for those who own homes that they wish to make better.

One of the most common improvements that can be made to a home is the instillation of a pool or hot tub.  These structures add comfort and fun to the home.  Both pieces can either be above ground or in ground.  While taxes are typically applied to these structures, there are some ways to avoid taxation, including placing the pool on pallets that can be removed or placing the structures away from the home.  Check with local tax laws to be sure.

Another major improvement is the building of a deck or porch.  These structures make it possible to enjoy the outdoors no matter what the weather is doing.  By leaving a small gap between the house and the deck, taxes may be avoided on the structure.  However, this gap may be fine for the deck; a roofing structure may not fair so well if not attached to the house.

Insulated windows help to cut energy costs and help to make the home more comfortable.  This improvement actually can help your taxes.  Many times insulated windows help individuals qualify for tax credits.
