Sunsets at Clearwater Beach’s Pier 60

Just as sunset occurs 365 days a year, so do the Sunset Celebrations at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach.  What began over ten years ago, as a way to draw people to the beach in the evenings and provide free entertainment to families is now a daily staple that offers a fantastic array of artisans, crafters, street performers and bands with universal appeal.

While Clearwater Beach’s Sunset Celebration is similar to the Key West’s famous sunset celebration populated by different street performers every few feet, Clearwater’s nightly event actually offers a wider variety of arts and craft vendors and showcases different local bands each night in addition to hosting a variety of talented street performers.

Two hours before sunset every evening, rain or shine, visitors to Clearwater’s Sunset Celebration can walk along Pier 60 and the area that leads to it and browse anywhere from forty to sixty different artist and crafter tables that line the sidewalk displaying their handmade wares.  From mundane to strange, the choices are varied.  Vintage cigar boxes made into purses, hand-etched crystal nail files and clip-on bra straps made of trendy beads are a few of the more unique items found one evening.  The selection changes with the season, and sometimes by the day. So, if you see something you like buy it that evening, as the vendors are not permanent and may not be there if you return another day.

Seven nights a week, Sunsets at Pier 60 features local bands performing live in the Pier 60 Pavilion.  Many evenings, generally on the weekend, specific types of music are highlighted.  Island Music and Jazz are two of the most popular genres and seem to draw a good-sized crowd.  Therefore, visitors will want to head to the pavilion early to get a good seat to see the bands play on those evenings.

Street performers are the other option for entertainment at the Sunsets at Pier 60 celebrations.  Talented jugglers, fire-eaters, knife throwers, animal trainers and more show off their distinctive abilities as crowds gather in around them cheering, jeering and laughing until finally the sun sets on yet another evening at Clearwater Beach’s Sunset at Pier 60.
