Honeymoon Island in Dunedin
Published by julia | Filed under Miscellaneous, Pinellas County Homes, Real Estate, Shout Outs
Some people consider Dunedin Causeway and Honeymoon Island as only a gateway to its more famous neighbor, Caladesi Island. Other visitors, however, understand that both Honeymoon Island and Dunedin Causeway are true destinations in their own right.
Travelling over Dunedin Causeway and leaving the mainland behind, a mesmerizing change of scenery occurs .Gone are street corners overwhelmed by competing gas stations and drugstores. There are no more strip shopping centers or rows of well-appointed homes on cul de sacs. Instead, drivers are treated to breathtaking views of water glistening in the sunlight on either side of the causeway while they watch rollerbladers, bicyclers, walkers and their dogs enjoy the wide paved paths that run along the length of the bridge. The only perceptible scent in the air is sea salt, and the only visible commerce on the two and a half mile causeway is a small clapboard building on the water’s edge that rents out sailboats, wakeboards and kayaks.
For those that choose to not stop on the Causeway, but to continue over it and through the park ranger gate encounter 2800 acres of unspoiled trails, beaches, and two-lane roads known as Honeymoon Island. With lush native plants covering much of the interior of the island, magnificent white sand beaches stretching along the perimeter and charming wooden stilt buildings conveniently placed with changing facilities, a café and an information center; a person simply cannot find a better way to spend a day at the beach.
Honeymoon Island’s exquisite scenery and wide sand beaches have made it into an extremely popular location for weddings of local and visiting couples. Not to worry, the island’s size and numerous beach areas, don’t allow even a large wedding to impede on a peaceful day at the beach.
Visitors can experience Honeymoon Island 365 days a year for a small fee, which goes to the upkeep of the park and facilities. More information on Honeymoon Island and the Dunedin Causeway is available at: http://www.floridastateparks.org/honeymoonisland/ParkSummary.cfm
