Espiritu Santo Mineral Springs at Safety Harbor Resort and Spa

spa.jpgNot many people realize that Pinellas County is home to five ancient healing natural mineral springs.  Discovered in 1539 by Spanish explorer Hernando Desoto the Espiritu Santo Mineral Springs in downtown Safety Harbor are believed by some to cure various ailments and create a sense of well being within the body.  At one point, the spring water was so well known it was bottled and shipped on barges to health conscious individuals throughout the world.  Now, however, to experience the Espiritu Santo Mineral Springs requires a visit to the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, which shares its 22 acres with the mineral springs.

The two million gallons of water the five springs produce each month is now the exclusive source of water for the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa.  Using a triple osmosis procedure to ensure its purity, The Safety Harbor Resort and Spa uses the mineral water in its pools, spa bath areas, and even the air conditioner.  In addition, guests enjoy fresh pitchers of the mineral spring water in their guest rooms, the spa, and the resort restaurants.

While it may seem cumbersome that visitors must visit the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa to experience the Espiritu Santo Mineral Springs, the Resort and Spa itself is a U.S. historical landmark and its sprawling full service spa facility is decorated with columns, tiles and statues, reminiscent of the Grecian bath houses of old.  The benefits of the springs, combined with the resort’s history and extremely reasonable pricing makes this a must visit for locals and visitors alike.
