boydtrail.jpgHave you made a trip to Boyd Hill Nature Preserve lately? Well, what’s keeping you. Located in south St. Petersburg along the shores of Lake Maggiore, this is a wonderland of nature. Boyd Hill features five unique ecosystems throughout the 245-acre park. Stroll the miles and miles of boardwalks and trails. You will feel like you have left the city for the peaceful, serene wilderness. The best part is that you can be there in less than 20 minutes from just about anywhere in St. Petersburg. Visit sand pine scrub or willow marsh. The names alone, conger up ideas of our native Florida plants and wildlife. Boyd Hill features a bird of prey aviary as well.

Boyd Hill is also part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Bring your binoculars and feast your eyes. Bird varieties too numerous to mention will keep you coming back for more. Boyd Hill is part of the North American Butterfly Association as well. Guided tours are available for those who would like to learn all they can about the plants and the wildlife.

Be sure to pack a picnic basket for the trip as there are numerous areas around the park to enjoy lunch amongst the trees. What a perfect time of year to take in the sights and sounds of the park. The little ones are easily entertained at the playground located at the entrance to the park. And don’t forget to visit the gift shop on your way out. You may find something to take with you as a remembrance of your day away from it all.
