farmers-market.jpgIf you love to buy your food fresh from the people who grow it, enjoy sampling local delicacies in a casual, relaxed environment, and appreciate the opportunity to buy art directly from local craftsmen and women, then you’ll love the Saturday Market in St. Petersburg, Florida. This is Pinellas County’s very own farmer’s market, and it’s truly a winner! Begun in November 2002, the market runs every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm from the beginning of October to the end of May each year. It’s conveniently located on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg, and currently hosts over 150 vendors from around the county and surrounding areas.

The Saturday Market is now the largest farmer’s market in the state of Florida, and is in the top 2% of farmer’s markets nationwide according to size. Over 2,000 guests come from far and wide to go to the market each Saturday. The market was started by volunteers, and has continued to grow through the grassroots efforts of those who are the most passionate about it. There is now a monthly newsletter, community kitchen, and public awareness program associated with the market, and it continues to grow and expand all the time.
In addition to the typical abundance of fresh produce you’d expect to find at a farmers market, you’ll find a large selection of freshly prepared foods being cooked right on the premises for you by the market’s regular vendors. If you’re looking for breakfast, for example, you’ll find it there in the form of Crepesville and Uhuru Breakfast Oasis. If you’re in the mood for a smoothie, Smoothie Man has just what you want. Barbecue, empanadas, snacks, baked goods, and a variety of entirely unique food creations abound throughout the market, so there’s sure to be something there to tempt your taste buds.

If arts and crafts are your thing, you’ll find them here. Locally made baskets, furniture, clothing, pottery, hand-made soaps, jewelry, and more are all sold at the Saturday Market. There are also a fair number of plant vendors for those who need a fresh flower or herb fix each week. Live music from local musicians rounds out this eclectic, spirited experience. If you’re in St. Petersburg on Saturday mornings, the Saturday Market is not to be missed!
